Curriculum Intent
Our aims are to allow students to develop:
- Their potential in terms of their academic achievement in health and social care/ child development and to ensure that all students will benefit from the subject curriculums in an environment where the importance of all students is recognised.
- The ability to make effective use of terminology, concepts and methods relevant to health and social care and to recognise the strengthens and limitations of ideas used.
- Skills which allow students to apply their knowledge and understanding to the care value base and various situations and case/child studies when in the classroom and on placement.
- An understanding of the importance of confidentiality and sensitivity in a care environment and that they are representing the school/ college when on work experience placement.
Health & Social Care Learning Journey
GCSE
OCR Level 2 Tech Award in Health and Social Care – This course is designed for students will an interest in the health and social care sector, who wish to acquire an understanding and the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. The students will explore human growth and development, health and social care services and factors affecting people’s health and well-being.
As part of the course requirements the students will experience one week’s work experience in a vocational environment.

Sixth Form
The course allows students progression to higher education such as degree courses, apprenticeships or employment. It is suitable for students considering a career in nursing, midwifery, social work, teaching, health visitor, paramedics, counselling and many more health related professions.
OCR Level 3 Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care – Students have the opportunity to take the BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care which is the equivalent in size to one A level. It is for students interested in learning about the health and social care sector alongside other fields of study, probably with a view to progression to a wide range of Degree courses, not necessarily the health or social care sector.
OCR Level 3 National Diploma in Health and Social Care – Students who want to progress directly into a career in the Health Care Sector should consider the BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Health and Social Care which is equivalent in size to two A levels. Students will study the same units required in the BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care over two years but will undertake another additional four units.
Students will be given the opportunity to experience a vocational placement and students opting for Double Health and Social Care will be required to complete compulsory work experience. Therefore, they must undergo a DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service) and any previous criminal offences may prevent students from enrolling or continuing with the course.
Health & Social Care Curriculum Overviews Sixth Form
Students completing the Single Course will study the Units 1 & Unit 5 in Year 12 followed by Unit 2 and Unit 12 in Year 13.
Students completing the Double Course will study all eight units mentioned above.
