Dear Parent/Carer
As we approach the end of the academic year, I wanted to thank you for your continued support. Students in Year 12 have had a productive first year in sixth form and we anticipate continued success in Year 13.
Whilst the end of Year 13 may feel like a long time away, students have been preparing throughout the year to consider their next steps. Weekly personal and professional development sessions have encouraged students to consider their options, alongside a wealth of opportunities promoted on our careers team and Unifrog. Many students have engaged with events that have encouraged them to think about life beyond EMS6, from work experience to residential trips, to a range of universities.
As a college, all students were invited to attend the UCAS Discovery Exhibition in May where students were able to have meaningful conversations with university representatives from across the UK. This was followed by students attending the Newcastle and/or Northumbria University open days in June. Most recently we welcomed a representative from Durham University who delivered a presentation on how to choose a university and personal statements.
Over the summer we encourage students to spend time researching their post-18 options, from universities to apprenticeships. Many universities will be holding open days where you can find out what is like to be an undergraduate. It is important to note that not all courses offer the same modules on their degree programmes and your child should be researching this; individual university websites provide all this information and is a good starting point.
From September, we will have a range of speakers come into college to talk to students about the different routes open to them. I would also like to highlight that on Thursday 19th September we will have an evening for parents to come into college to hear about the decisions that your son/daughter will be making.
In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at the college.
Best wishes ,
Mrs L Henderson ,
Director of Sixth Form Studies
